Where's the Gold? by Pamela Allen, ISBN 9780143501473

> Children's Books > Picture Books

Jeremy, Bellamy and Ted, three pirates brave and bold, set out to find treasure with the help of a very annoying parrot. They make their way deep underground, into the dark and the damp. The parrot, away from the sky and the sun and unable to fly, trails behind; repeatedly calling out 'where's the gold?' When they come to something scary in the tunnel, and not knowing what it is, they huddle together in fear. When the parrot, in the confusion, bites Ted on the bottom, the three pirates are convinced there is a monster after them and flee back the way they came; not stopping until they are back safe in their boat and out at sea.

The story is enlivened by two die-cut holes in the pages of the book that lead the reader through the page and into the tunnel, then, at the end, out of the tunnel into the sunshine.

About the Author: Pamela Allen

Pamela Allen

Pamela Allen was born in New Zealand in 1934. A childhood love of drawing led her to study fine arts at Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland and, after teacher training, to accept a position as a secondary school art teacher. Marriage to a sculptor, William, the birth of two children, and a move to Sydney followed. When her youngest child started school Pamela approached publishers, hoping to find work illustrating books. When one suggested that she illustrate and write a book, her new career was born.

The excellence of Pamela Allen's work has been recognised by the numerous awards she has won. She is the first illustrator to have won the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Picture Book of the Year Award in two consecutive years for Who Sank the Boat? (1983) and Bertie and the Bear (1984). She has twice won the NSW Premier's Award for Best Children's Book for Mr Archimede's Bath in 1980 and for Who Sank the Boat? in 1983, while in 1984 she was awarded an International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) Honour Diploma for Illustration, again for Who Sank the Boat?.

In 1986 she received the New Zealand Library Association's Russell Clark Award for Illustration for A Lion in the Night and Watch Me was shortlisted for the CBCA Picture Book of the Year Award. In 1989 she was awarded the Helen Paul Encouragement Award for Fancy That!. In 1990 I Wish I Had a Pirate Suit was shortlisted for the CBCA Picture Book of the Year Award, the New Zealand AIM Children's Picture Book of the Year Award and the Russell Clark Award.

My Cat Maisie was shortlisted for the 1991 CBCA Picture Book of the Year Award and was winner of the New Zealand AIM Children's Picture Book of the Year Award 1991. Belinda was an Honour Book in the 1993 CBCA Picture Book of the Year Awards and was shortlisted for the NZ Library Association's Russell Clark Award. Mr McGee Goes to Sea was also shortlisted for the NZ Library Association's Russell Clark Award for Illustration in 1993. Mr McGee and the Biting Flea was shortlisted for the CBCA Picture Book of the Year Award.

Pamela continues to delight us with her stories, including Black Dog, Alexander's Outing, Clippity Clop, Mr McGee, Mr McGee and the Blackberry Jam, Waddle Giggle Gargle!, The Bear's Lunch and Mr McGee and the Perfect Nest.
