Includes a new story from Elyne Mitchell: 'Wild Echoes Ringing'.
A silver brumby is special . . . but he will be hunted by man and horse alike, and must be stronger than both . . .
Thowra, the magnificent silver stallion, is king of the brumbies. He will defend his herd from the might horse, The Brolga, in the most savage of struggles. But The Brolga is not the only danger - Thowra needs all his speed and cunning to save the herd from capture by man. In a desperate chase through the mountains, it seems there is no longer anywhere for him to run to . . .
'Wild Echoes Ringing': The characters of Socks, the black brumby with the four white legs, and Lightning, the cattledog - who first met in 'The Thousandth Brumby' - are reunited in this previously unpublished story.

Elyne Mitchell is regarded as one of the most distinguished writers of children's books in Australia. She has been writing books for over sixty years and her Brumby books have been published in over forty countries, bringing Australia and the Snowy Mountains to the world.
Born in 1913 in Melbourne, Elyne's interest in horses began as a child when her father commanded the ANZAC Mounted Division and Desert Mounted Corps. She had lessons at the army horse riding school and developed her passion for horses. Later, with her husband Tom, she settled on his family farm at Towong Hill in the Snowy Mountains.
Her first children's book The Silver Brumby was written for the eldest of her four children, "to give her the magic joy of reading" and the view from Elyne's home and her rides through the Upper Murray have inspired her writing, becoming vivid parts of her Brumby stories.
In 1999 Elyne was both delighted and embarrassed to be honoured by a Tribute Weekend of festivities in the Snowy Mountains. Her contribution to the Snowy Mountains area through children's literature has brought millions of children to know and love this special part of Australia.
According to Elyne , "Life is about achievement and service and doing something for your country. I wish that the young people of today were brought up to realise the joy of serving their country. It gives me great pleasure if I realise I have done a service to somebody. That's the secret of enjoying life."
Elyne Mitchell died in 2002, aged 89.
