Boone Daniels, a laid-back private investigator, gathers on Pacific Beach California with his Dawn Patrol buddies as usual. Even though there's no surf to speak of, Dave the Love God, High Tide, Johnny Banzai and Hang Twelve are all present; the only regular not reporting for duty is Sunny Day, who's in Oz with the Woman's Professional Surfing Tour and also making a video for Billabong. But as the young ones leave for work making room for the older veterans and successful entrepreneurs, the second shift on the daily surfing clock begins, The Gentlemen's Hour. So when Boone decides to stick around and learn a thing or two he doesn't envisage taking on a matrimonial case. However, that soon becomes the least of his worries.
When The Sundowner, an icon symbolic of the San Diego surf scene, is the location for a dispute between a twentyish surfer from Oahu's North Shore and a member of the Rockpile Crew, the harsh reality comes to light and the laid-back streets of Pacific Beach are no longer safe at night. So, when lawyer Petra Hall, who has a thing with Boone, asks him to take on the murder case and help the defence, he reluctantly agrees bringing with it an outrage from the rest of the Dawn Patrol.
Left to his own devices Boone needs to find out the truth, as both cases merge into one and close friends come into question. Will Boone hang up his wetsuit for a tailored one and a desk job or are there more waves to be caught?
