This issue will focus on the contemporary city as cultural artefact, literary symbol and physical site of tensions between globalisation and suburbanism. The assistant commissioning editor for this issue is up-and-coming cultural studies commentator Christen Cornell. Writers already approached to contribute to this issue include Graeme Davison, Rebecca Solnit, Mark Peel, and Andrew Brown-May.
There will be a suite of articles to be called Transports of Delight, including Jeremy Kruse on skateboarding in Melbourne and Canberra and John Brewer on motorbikes and "bikies" in Florence and Los Angeles. There will be articles on the Melbourne and the Sydney novel, and on cities in contemporary poetry. This issue will also include 16 colour plates of photographs and cartoons relating to urban life and architecture in Australia.
