Tohby Riddle is the author of seven picture books and humour books published in Australia and overseas. His reputation was established with the picture books The Great Escape from City Zoo and The Tip at the End of the Street.
He believes in portraying deeper issues in his picture books than the children's book' classification would suggest. Indeed, in a recent article on children's book classification in The Age, Tohby defies these boundaries and is proud of the fact that his books are bought by adults too and enjoyed at different levels by children and adults.
The Great Escape from City Zoo is filled with contemporary images from twentieth century popular culture. "Picture books tell a story in words and pictures like movies do," says Tohby. "So, The Great Escape from City Zoo was intended to read a bit like an album of stills from a feature movie, with accompanying captions." Look closely and you will find references to King Kong, Abbey Road, Edward Hoppper's Nighthawkes; the famous Lochness monster shot; Bugsy Siegel's Pink Flamingo casino; Ansel Adams' photograph; plus allusions to all kinds of movie classics. Tohby hoped that in using these classic sources that the story would take on the quality of a feature length road movie and twentieth century legend.
Tohby trained in art at the Sydney College of the Arts and architecture at the University of Sydney. He is the author/illustrator of The Tip at the End of the Street, Fifty Fairies You Ought to Know About and The Royal Guest.
Tohby produces a weekly cartoon for The Good Weekend. His cartoons have also appeared in The Sydney Morning Herald's Stay In Touch column. His illustrations, articles and other writings appear monthly in the NSW School Magazine where he is an occasional member of the editorial staff.
