Inspector Rebus 13: Resurrection Men by Ian Rankin, ISBN 9780752847061

> Fiction Books > Crime Books

Rebus is off the case - quite literally. A few days into a murder inquiry following the brutal death of an Edinburgh art dealer, Rebus blows up at his superior, DCS Gill Templer, and is sent into purdah. Which, in his case, means the Scottish Police College, sited on the edge of a village in central Scotland. Rebus has been sent there for "retraining"; in other words, it's his Last Chance Saloon.

He is not alone. At the college, he is put into a group of similar officers - people who have a problem with the very institution that houses them. They are given an old unsolved case to work on. It will hopefully teach them the merits of teamwork, while allowing the professionals to assess this unholy "Wild Bunch". But there are those in the team who have their own secrets - secrets not unconnected to the very case they have been given - and they'll stop at nothing to protect them.

As if that wasn't enough, the Scottish Crime Squad have a favour to ask of Rebus. They think they've found someone who can deliver the inside info on the east coast's biggest gangster, "Big Ger" Cafferty. All they need is a link-man, someone to act as go-between. They've decided on Rebus, whether he likes it or not. Meanwhile, back in Edinburgh, DS Siobhan Clarke must work the case of the murdered art dealer, which will take her closer to Cafferty's world than she'd ever anticipated . . .

Inspector Rebus 13: Resurrection Men by Ian Rankin

About the Author: Ian Rankin

Ian Rankin

Ian Rankin OBE, DL, (born 28 April 1960 in Cardenden, Fife) is a Scottish crime writer. His best known books are the Inspector Rebus novels. He has also written several pieces of literary criticism.

Rankin did not set out to be a crime writer. He thought his first novels Knots and Crosses and Hide and Seek were mainstream books, more in keeping with the Scottish traditions of Robert Louis Stevenson and even Muriel Spark (the subject of Rankin's uncompleted Ph.D. thesis), and was disconcerted by their classification as genre fiction. However, he was reassured by Scottish novelist Allan Massie, who tutored Rankin while Massie was writer-in-residence at Edinburgh University, with the following words; "who would want to be a dry academic writer when "they could be John Buchan?"

Rankin's Inspector Rebus novels are mainly set in Edinburgh, and are major contributions to the Tartan Noir genre. Ten of the novels were televised on ITV, starring John Hannah as Rebus in Series 1 & 2 with Ken Stott taking on the role for Series 3-5.

Rankin stated on Radio Five Live that he would soon start work on a five- or six-issue run on the comic book Hellblazer, although the story may be turned into a standalone graphic novel instead. The Vertigo Comics panel at WonderCon 2009 confirmed that the story would be published as a graphic novel called Dark Entries, the second release from the company's new Vertigo Crime imprint.
