Jeremy Wohlers' The People of Skies takes place in Zimbabwe in 2001. Civil strife caused by hyperinflation, massive unemployment and chronic fuel shortages threatens to destroy Robert Mugabe's regime. However, Zimbabwe's redoubtable president is not so easily daunted, especially since he has the police, the army, the war veterans, the infamous CIO (Central Intelligence Organisation) and the fearsome Green Bombers - national service men - at his disposal.
So how does one survive in such tumultuous times? Ndlovu is an ordinary man with an extraordinary plan. A menial worker in a funeral parlour, he discovers how to make the moribund economy and death work for him. Ndlovu 'borrows' bodies from work, pretends to be transporting them to remote locations, thus exploiting the only way to circumvent petrol rationing, then sells the extra fuel on the black market. Ndlovu enlists the support of mad Archie, resident lunatic and notorious dissident. Inevitably, they fall foul of the state security apparatus; however, they do not capitulate. Instead, they remain true to the spirit of the times and employ mad Archie's favourite adage, 'if you think you've gone too far, you haven't gone far enough!'
