More than 60,000 Australians have been killed in war, and many of them were Australian sporting 'heroes'. Now, for the first time, this book tells of the lives and untimely deaths of the 115 VFL (now AFL) football 'heroes' who made the supreme sacrifice.
These were men who played the Australian football code at the elite level, but never returned from war. They fought, and died, at Gallipoli, in the mud of Flanders, in the deserts of Northern Africa, in the jungles of New Guinea and in the air and at sea.
The book presents the personal tragedies, of South Melbourne's Jack Turnbull dying of wounds before he could see his baby son, of Hawthorn's Richard Pirrie being the first Australian killed at the D-Day landings, of Collingwood's Percy Rowe asking his best mate to look after his family. These 115 footballers fell for Australia and all are Ultimate Heroes.
The book took sports journalists Jim Main and David Allen several years to research and most of the material discovered, including more than 250 photographs, has never previously been published.
