The essays and poems in this book reflect the variety of the authors interests. He is a senior Melbourne barrister of paternal Greek origin who has a deep and continuing interest in China and its language; and the classical history of both of these countries.
He has also had a lifelong fascination for horses and horse racing together with a general interest in Australian history. These interests explain the subject matter of this book and provide the link which might, at first sight, appear curious.
In each of the essays and poems there is always an underpinning of the culture and history of the people and the places where the author finds himself. In Canton, for example, he ponders the essence of Cantonese cuisine, as well as the linguistic embarrassment of a friend. In Mytilini he recalls one of the most thrilling tales of classical Greece. On Flinders Island he abhors the horrors of the forced Aboriginal resettlement at Wyballena. In Beijing he honours the memory of the great Jesuit priest of the 17th century in Ming China Matteo Ricci as well as the famous horse painter Xu Bei Hong. The difficulties of translating classical Chinese poetry are pondered at a bridge outside Cold Mountain Temple near Suzhou. Then in Byron Bay there is the humour of advertisements involving alternative life styles and therapies. At Mt Macedon there is the explanation of why there are so many coniferous trees. Phar Lap in bronze and his mentor are remembered at Flemington as is the end of the activities of those erstwhile racecourse characters known as emus. At Beechworth there are humorous memories of Ned and his iconic armour.
