The Civitates was intended as a companion for the Theatrum, but was designed to be more popular in approach.
Franz Hogenberg had engraved most of the plates for Ortelius's Theatrum, and may have been responsible for originating Civitates but he was not the only engraver.
Many different artists and cartographers worked on it, the most significant of whom as Antwerp artist Georg (Joris) Hoefnagel - and after his death his son Jakob.
He produced most of the original material for the Spanish and Italian towns and reworked and modified those of other contributors.
