In July 2003 a global audience was enthralled by an edge-of-the-seat battle for the Tour championship between Texan Lance Armstrong and his German rival Jan ‘the Kaiser’ Ullrich. Insiders say it was one of the most riveting races in Tour history. But the 2004 race promises to be even more extraordinary: Lance Armstrong has now won five consecutive Tours, but in the 100-year history of the event no one has ever won six.
