Errors and misunderstanding of principles
My son bought this book for a high school pre-engineering course. Being an engineer, I picked it up to get an overview. I was not looking for errors, but within minutes noted multiple errors. Some were typos. Others indicated a misunderstanding of fundamental principles. Ex 1 The chapter on electrical engineering says that, in a DC circuit with 2 light bulbs in series, with each bulb having the same resistance and voltage drop, the 2nd bulb will glow less brightly than the 1st, just because it is 2nd. This is fundamentally incorrect. Ex 1b The same section uses the term collects with regard to each bulb's power. Ex the second light bulb would collect a decreasing part of the nine volts. I have been in the field 25 years, and no one uses such terminology. Ex 2 The mechanical engineering section on simple machines has a graphic illustrating forces and opposing forces. Of 5 examples, 3 have the opposing force labeled in the wrong direction. I found the above in 10 minutes.
