As Warden of the north, Lord Eddard Stark counts it a curse when King Robert bestows on him the office of Hand. His honour weighs him down at court where a true man does what he will, not what he must . . . and a dead enemy is a thing of beauty. The old gods have no power in the south, Stark's family is split, and there is treachery at court. Worst, a vengeance-mad boy has grown to maturity in exile in the Free Cities beyond the sea. Heir of the mad Dragon King deposed by Robert, he claims the Iron Throne.

You've seen the TV show, now it's time to give the books a go. A tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in times of a grim omen. For people who don't normally read fantasy, this series is an amazing read. - Ines (QBD)

You loved the show, now dive deeper into the world of Westeros. Martin is the puppet master of fantasy writers, there are many string holding up your heart, and reading GoT will pull on every one. Apart from being a television phenomenon, Martin's series is (in my opinion) a great introduction to the fantasy genre, it is accessible and relatable in a way that I find a lot of fantasy is not. - Joshua (QBD)
