'I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.'

'My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me.' So begins the tale of Kvothe - currently known as Kote, the unassuming innkeepter - from his childhood in a troupe of travelling players, through his years spent as a near-feral orphan in a crime-riddled city, to his daringly brazen yet successful bid to enter a difficult and dangerous school of magic.

In these pages you will come to know Kvothe the notorious magician, the accomplished thief, the masterful musician, the dragon slayer, the legend-hunter, the lover, the thief and the infamous assassin.

If you haven't read The Name of the Wind, do yourself a favour – pick it up and read the prologue. This is one of my top 3 books of all time. It is beautiful and adventurous and witty, filled with magic and music and I cannot recommend it enough. Rothfuss crafts a unique and deep world that you will not be able to put down until you've finished this book and the next one and the one after that. - Matthew (QBD)

There was a man, adviser to kings, slayer of dragons, master of magic, a man who could call on the elements themselves, a man who has walked through the fae, who made himself a mantle made of shadow, and has talked with the gods themselves. What has happened to this man? Can Kote once again become Kvothe, the legend he once was? - Joseph (QBD)

A fantastic and wonderfully written epic fantasy novel, one that I will read again and again. I found this book quite refreshing after reading the A Song of Ice and Fire Series. The reader is taken along for the ride in the retelling of Kvothe's story, told by himself and beginning in his childhood. This novel has it all, a great magic system, intense drama, great humour, suffering and romance. In my opinion, The Name of the Wind is an instant classic which every fantasy-lover should read. - Georgia (QBD)

'The Name of the Wind' by Patrick Rothfuss has to be my favourite fantasy read of all time. Rothfuss has created a huge world with a truly engrossing plot that like me, will keep you reading well into the night. After a reading a few 'okay-ish' series, this book and it's sequel 'The Wise Man's Fear' reignited my passion for the fantasy genre. I highly recommend this series for all fantasy lovers! - Mitchell (QBD)

Name Of The Wind
Name of the wind is the opening book in the King Killer Chronicles Trilogy, I was completely taken in by the story after only one chapter. Following the story of Kvothe, a young child in a troupe of traveling performers. When tragedy strikes he loses family and friends and must cope in a world he struggles to understand, with music his only friend he learns to live again. At too young an age Kvothe joins a school of magic and becomes legend. I became so involved with this character and related to his trials in spite of the fact that he is living in a world of magic and mystical creatures. The way Kvothe responds to every new situation is captivating. This is the most immersive and intriguing storyline. You will not want to put the book down. -Sam, QBD Highpoint

Name of the Wind
Full of wit, drama, humour, failure, loss and Kvothe's unfortunate talent of digging himself into a hole- this is the perfect story for a first time fantasy reader or a lover of the genre. Name of the Wind follows Kvothe, a child genius growing up in his parents troupe, travelling the land while being taught sympathy (magic), and longing to attend the infamous University. Kvothe is fifteen when he's accepted into the University, making him the youngest student to be accepted in several years, but this after becoming an orphan living on the streets of a crime ridden city. Rothfuss' writing is elegant and clever, allowing the protagonist to recount his life while maintaining an additional story in his present day. 10/10 - Holly

The Kingkiller Chronicles 01: The Name of the Wind
This book is one of the greatest fantasy novels I have ever read. Chronicling the tale of Kvothe, aspiring student of Naming. The ability to control matter with a word by seeing into its pure and most basic state. The novel contains amazing imagery, even stretching into music and religions. The world Kvothe inhabits is full of mystery, primal forces, aristocracy and an incredible type of magic that seems almost scientific in its application. The series contains beautiful concepts of magic, music and self-empowerment. It is a debut masterwork that heralds what is likely to be a long career of successful fantasy novels. Reviewed by 19aw
