In a world where people born with an exceptional skill, known as a Grace, are feared and exploited, Katsa carries the burden of a skill even she despises: the Grace of killing. She lives under the command of her Uncle Randa, King of the Middluns and is expected to carry out his dirty work, punishing and torturing anyone who displeases him. Breaking arms and cutting off fingers are her stock-in-trade. Finding life under his rule increasingly unbearable, Katsa forms an underground Council, whose purpose is to combat the destructive behavior of the seven kings - after all, the Middluns is only one of the seven kingdoms and each of them is ruled its own king with his own personal agenda for power. When the Council hears that the King of Liend's father has been kidnapped Katsa investigates... But something dark and deadly is rising in the north and creeping across the continent and behind it all lurks the shadowy figure of a one eyed king...

Graceling was a lot of fun and a solid read. An easy story to read in one sitting, it has strong characters, a great romance, character development, a fast-moving plot and is technically a stand alone. - Melissa (QBD)

A book to fall in love with
A land where people with two different eye colours are graced with a certain skill, a mysterious king with ulterior motives and a female protagonist that doesn't need a man to defend her. A land where there are seven different kings of seven bordering kingdoms so there is always drama. Kristin Cashore's fantastic fantasy read will keep you hooked until the very last page. A niece of one of the kings, Katsa, happens to be graced with killing and despite her best efforts is used as the King's personal thug to threaten his enemies. Little does he know, Katsa has recruited a secret council and is righteously helping those in all kingdoms who can't help themselves. Then in a dangerous race to figure out who is behind the kidnapping of a king's father, Katsa will have to defend the heir to one of the thrones with her life. With adventure, romance and a beautifully constructed fantasy world, you will no doubt fall in love with this book as much as I have. - Lauren

Graceling
This book was so engaging and the magic element is really original, just like the plot. So descriptive and beautiful, I loved it from beginning to end. See for yourself and give it a go! Reviewed by 21bc
