You are about to discover the secrets of The Quick –

But first you must travel to Victorian Yorkshire, and there, on a remote country estate, meet a brother and sister alone in the world and bound by tragedy. In time, you will enter the rooms of London's mysterious Aegolius Club – a society of some of the richest, most powerful men in fin-de-siecle England. And at some point – we cannot say when – these worlds will collide.

It is then, and only then, that a new world emerges, one of romance, adventure and the most delicious of horrors – and the secrets of The Quick are revealed.
    Unexpectedly gripping, Victorian-style horror
I don't usually buy books on a whim, but this one's cover plus an intriguing endorsement from Hilary Mantel really grabbed me. It's a curious book, and one that kept me on my toes. It starts off seeming like a Jane Eyre-ish coming-of-age story, then becomes a literary, very Gothic murder mystery, then BAM - turns into something completely different. The blurb is misleading this book is not about The Quick, not at all. But to tell you would spoil the fun. There is an intriguing cast of characters: sensitive James, his quietly courageous sister Charlotte, the lethal Miss Swift, and the increasingly detestable Augustus Mould. I think the author overreaches with her ending, with much being left unresolved, but this is high-class Victorian-style horror and there is much to enjoy.
