The traditional linear career path is disappearing inthe 21st century world of work. This thoughtprovokingand engaging book follows the firstgroups of the Boomer generation worldwide as theybegin to take steps away from a linear career pathinto an uncharted stage somewhere in betweenmiddle-age and old-age, a full-time professional lifeand retirement in the traditional sense of the word.After decades in successful careers in the UnitedStates, Europe, and Asia, these interviewees foundthemselves nearing the glass ceiling of age andfacing traditional retirement. The problem was,nothing about this traditional 'next step'corresponded to their aspirations or potential. All ofthem still felt in the prime of life, had no intentionof getting in the back seat, and playing a passiverole, but no longer wished to pursue the linearcorporate, academic, or industrial career path to itsbitter end.Unlike in earlier stages of career change, where onechoice must often be made among the manypossibilities, for people at this stage, plurality andflexibility are key. This desire for plurality and toextend 'the prime of life' by a decade or more, canmean Non-Executive Board work, applying businessexpertise in a non-profit environment, living out apassion, mentoring or academic work, and for many,a little of each. But all the choices reveal a deeperand urgent desire to take control and fulfil some ofthe dreams that were set aside when this generationbegan their careers: resolving the work-life balance,making a difference, and doing it their way.Using the wisdom and lessons learned from theseinterviews, the authors put forward an essentialroad map for professionals in business andacademia, or for entrepreneurs, who arecontemplating this type of change. It is vital tounderstand the essential steps, such as managingone's network, dealing with time, and the choice ofplurality when preparing for and living through thiscareer and life-changing process. Some of thesesteps can and should be taken while still working ina full-time career, while others provide directionsand subjects of reflection when planning and livingthrough this change.
