This book seeks to utilize the same formula that made 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' by F. Scott Fitzgerald, illustrated by Calef Brown, a success. A classic work of fiction illustrated by a well-known artist and designed in a compelling package and priced affordably, this book was published in sync with the release of a major film. 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' followed suit, coinciding with the worldwide release of Tim Burton's film and made many besteller lists--including the New York Times.
Our book is the first illustrated edition. This edition conveys an aesthetic that is at once beautiful and rough--like the book's landscape and will appeal to both teens and older readers. The book offers an unabridged text, but with more than 40 original illustrations that will appeal strongly to a broad audience. The 34 chapter openers alternate between featuring spot illustrations evoking the Yorkshire landscape with its flora and fauna in a graphic manner and gorgeous lithograph-like illustrations that literally frames a scene from the book in miniature. There are 12 romantic portraits of the main characters throughout the book (think Egon Schiele meets Elizabeth Peyton--a beautiful mix of watercolor and rough pencil work in a very saturated colour palette). Also included are the Earnshaw and Linton family trees in the artist's hand.
WUTHERING HEIGHTS (the film) will be directed by Andrea Arnold, who won an Academy Award for her short live action film Wasp, in 2005. Her film Red Road was cited as "one of the discoveries of this year's Cannes Film Festival (2006)." It went on to win the Jury Prize at Cannes that year. Arnold won the 2007 BAFTA Award for Best Newcomer for directing Red Road. Her 2009 film Fish Tank premiered at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival, where she once again won the Jury Prize. The film also went on to win the BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film in 2010.
