Saladin was born in the castle of Tikrit, in modern-day Iraq. He was named Yusuf, which means 'trouble and suffering'. When he grew up, he would be given a new name by his people - Saladin, meaning 'righteousness of the faith'. For Saladin would unite the Muslim peoples of the Middle East and vanquish the invaders from his land.
