Diprotodon was the first Australian fossil mammal to be given an official scientific name. In 1838 the famous London scientist, Sir Richard Owen, gave this name to a few broken teeth that had been found in one of the Wellington caves in New South Wales.
The word Diprotodon means two forward-pointing teeth. This extinct, giant marsupial had a big pair of prominent incisor teeth that point straight ahead at the very front of the lower jaw. They are very impressive shovel-like nippers.
