At the age of sixteen Daisy Tanner's ne'er do well father married her off to a guard on the ship that was taking them to Botany Bay. When her husband, an abusive boor who made her dread the marriage bed, dies in an accident, Daisy finds she's free. Hoping to finally made a sensible match of her own choosing, she returns to England to try to marry Geoffrey Sauvage, an old acquaintance, now the Earl of Egremeont. Although there is no romance between them than what she wants, reasoning he will make few demands on her.
