From the earliest days of the colony until very recent years a small patch of land at the entrance to Sydney Harbour served as Australia's principal maritime quarantine station. Thousands of immigrants and travellers passed through this remote and now quiet place, and many, taken by illness, never passed beyond the boundaries of the Station.
