As a newly almost-dead vampire, Cat is still struggling with her ability to absorb powers she can't control. Plus, her recent pyrokinetic display is the ammunition a zealot ghoul named Appollyon is using to try and start a species war. Vampires and ghouls have always kept peace because neither side could win an all-out war, but Cat's new powers have the potential to upset that delicate balance since no one knows the secret behind her abilities.
Cat and Bones can't just kill Appollyon because it might fuel the ghoul conflict, but doing nothing could prove just as deadly. When Cat seeks help through her old job, she's stunned to find Tate running things instead of her uncle. Then when Bones enlists the aid of Marie Laveau, ghoul queen of New Orleans, the price behind Marie's assistance might prove more dangerous than anything Apollyon could come up with.
