The emergence of Queer theory during the past decade represents a huge leap in our understanding of lesbian, gay and bisexual, and transgendered peoples. It has opened up new approaches for treating sexuality and gender as subjects worthy of consideration in their own right, rather than as offshoots of general cultural theory. Queer Theory and Social Change argues that there is a crisis within Queer theory over whether or not its theories can actually deliver change. Max H. Kirsch argues that even though the new social movements of the 1960s may not have succeeded in integrating diverse segments of the population, this does not foreclose the usefulness of the theories they drew on, such as political economy, for analyzing exploitation, inclusion, and our current social conditions. Queer Theory and Social Change presents a challenging alternative to the current fascination with post-modern analyses of identity, culture, and difference.
