Kathleen Horan‚ a reporter at WNYC‚ founded relationshipobit.com when after a difficult breakup with her boyfriend‚ her father passed away two weeks later. As she was writing her father's obituary‚ Kathleen recognized how helpful it was to have a place to celebrate that life‚ recognize the survivors‚ and put things to rest. She began to wonder what it would be like to write another obituary - this time for the death of her relationship. How it would be remembered. Cause of death. Surivors (if any). Date of birth and the date it breathed it's last. Thus Relationship Obits was born.
Divided into categories such as Peter Pan Syndrome‚ Better Off Without You‚ Death of True Love‚ Doomed from the Start‚ and I F**ed Up‚ each obit has a heading‚ a cause of death‚ and the obituary. The book is highly designed throughout‚ with black and white illustrations‚ and also includes a do-it-yourself obituary guide including MadLibs type fill-in-the-blanks‚ a history of the obituary‚ and more.
Relationship Obits is more than just a book for people who've been burned by love (although who hasn't). It's a celebration of love‚ a recognition that we all go through the end of relationships and just as much as love is a huge part of life‚ so is loss of that love.
Relationship Obits will include causes of death such as:
Complications brought on by an In-n-Out Burger
He decided to become a priest
He came out of the closet
She got bored.
From divorce to affairs‚ roommates and high school sweethearts‚ Relationship Obits reveals the unexplored underbelly of love‚ and life.
