London has been covered with a mysterious and choking fog. So the government did the only sensible thing - they lifted the city into the air. Now the rich and titled continue their priveleged lives while the poor and opportunistic create a new society right below. But one woman walks a fine line between the two - Cherry St. Croix.
Orphaned by the death of her parents, raised in a circus until was found by her guardian, kept contained in the rigorously defined structure of Society, Cherry rebels by living two lives. In one, the well-to-do miss attends Society functions and soirees. In the other life, she is Miss Black, a bounty collector that stalks the fog-choked streets below London proper in search of extra coin to feed a dangerous habit. But a rash of killings puts her at odds with the powerful entities who run things below - especially Micajah Hawke, ruler of the Midnight Menagerie, lower London's venue for all things scandalous.
As the killings increase, and the line between science and magic thins, Cherry finds herself caught in a dangerous game of cat and mouse. Never one to shy from trouble, she risks everything - identity, reputation, and her life - to hunt down a killer and expose those pulling his strings. But nothing below is at it seems, and Cherry has to fight cravings both familiar and new... before her luck runs out.
