Slip is a form of coloured liquid clay which can be used for decoration on its own or covered with glaze at a later firing. Using slip in ceramic pieces is an ancient technique and was used on early Roman and Greek vases. There are many ways in which slips can be used such as sponging, marbling, brushing on, using stencils, trailing, sgraffito and inlay. This book covers all these methods and illustrates each with the work of contemporary potters. It explains how to make up slips and engobes, as well as ways of using them at higher temperatures and with glazes. The book is illustrated with working potters in action and many images of finished pieces.
