Published by Storm King Art Center to coincide with a three-year exhibition at The Storm King Art Center, to recapture the experience of viewing Smith's work during his lifetime, in his fields at Bolton Landing in the Adirondacks. First re-creating the scene at Bolton Landing, a moving essay by Smith's daughter Candida captures in the most personal and direct terms the man himself, his struggles and delights, and the intensity of his working life. This is followed by a memoir by Irving Sandler and reminiscences by friends of the artist. The text is accompanied by photographs taken by fellow artists and by Smith himself. The balance of the book is a sumptuous album of the evolving Storm King exhibition, featuring major works by Smith sent from collections all over the country. Jerry L. Thompson, one of the foremost photographers of sculpture, has captured Smith's work in summer and snow, at sunrise and dusk, glistening in the rain and presiding over the mists. These photographs provide a new lens through which to view the sculpture of David Smith. AUTHOR: H. Peter Stern has been chairman and president of Storm King Art Center since its inception in 1960. He has served as vice chairman of the World Monuments Fund since 1971. David R. Collens joined the Storm King Art Center in 1974 as curator and assumed the position of Director in 1979. Since his arrival at Storm King, he has had the responsibility of curating all aspects of each exhibition. Candida Smith, after a career as a dancer and choreographer, now serves as both advisor and curator for her father's work. Irving Sandler, art critic and historian, is Professor Emeritus of Art History at the State University of New York, Purchase. Thompson specializes in photographing sculpture and paintings, and is work is in the collections of numerous museums.
