Elyne Mitchell is regarded as one of the most distinguished writers of children's books in Australia. She has been writing books for over sixty years and her Brumby books have been published in over forty countries, bringing Australia and the Snowy Mountains to the world.Born in 1913 in Melbourne, Elyne's interest in horses began as a child when her father commanded the ANZAC Mounted Division and Desert Mounted Corps. She had lessons at the army horse riding school and developed her passion for horses. Later, with her husband Tom, she settled on his family farm at Towong Hill in the Snowy Mountains.
