Help / FAQ / About QBD Books

QBD (Queensland Book Depot) was started in the late 1890s by the Uniting Church as a retail business selling religious material. Over the many years leading up to the 1980s QBD developed into a major retailer in Queensland. By this time QBD had 50 stores across Queensland selling a large range of religious and general books, stationery plus specialising in student text books.

As with many retailers that failed to identify and keep pace with changing consumer trends the business started to face trading difficulties and was placed on the market by the church. It was sold a number of times at which point the business was no longer viable as an ongoing concern and the stores were sold off individually in 1991.

This offered the Robinson family their first opportunity into business ownership with the purchase of QBD at Garden City Shopping Centre Mt Gravatt, Queensland.

As with many first businesses, QBD opened with conservative plans hoping to make a fair wage and eventually repay the bank. With an overdraft and a lot of energy the family got to work rebuilding the shop at Garden City. It did not take long before the customers started returning. Focused on service, price, merchandising, range and all the everyday issues that makes a great retailer QBD once again began to grow.

With the breakup of the old group now complete a total of eight shops were sold off by 1992 and the remaining outlets were closed. At this time the Robinson family purchased the naming rights to "QBD" which allowed them to expand the shop network once again.

In October 1993 QBD opened its second shop at Indooroopilly and signed the lease for its third location in Maroochydore to open in November 1994. During this time the branding was refocused to be known as "QBD The Bookshop". During the next few years the other QBD shops owned by other operators were either closed down or purchased by the Robinson family.

With the opening of the sixth location at the Myer Centre in Brisbane the storage stress was too much for the home garage (with the local street blocked by a semi-trailer and the buses not able to pass it was time!), so the first warehouse was purchased in Sumner Park with a small office space totaling 150sqm (this is equivalent to an average shop). A second move was made to a 1200sqm warehouse, with QBD then relocating to Richlands to its current 3000sqm building.

Many changes were made to the business model over the early years with the most dramatic being stock ranging. With a focus on stability of sales, service and profitability it became very apparent the old QBD range did not work. During the early years QBD moved away from stationery and student text books and embraced bulk quantities of hugely discounted product that saw QBD define a unique market in this area while still offering a full range of new releases and general books.

In October 2016, Cover Syndicate Pty Ltd purchased the QBD business.

Re-branded as QBD Books, our continued commitment to customers has ensured an extremely strong following; offering the best loyalty program in the industry, massive savings off new titles and a huge range of readily available titles in store with more available to customer order.

The future is bright for the industry and with more new locations on the horizon, QBD Books will continue to be a major book retailer in Australia.
