Motivated by a long-standing interest in Aboriginal culture and a desire to contribute to the reconciliation process, Penny Tweedie spent a year travelling around Australia to photograph and interview young indigenous Austrians. The result is 'Standing Strong', a dynamic and historic collection of photographs and interviews that celebrates the successes of young indigenous Australia.
The Aboriginal people of Australia suffered a devastating blow with coming of European settlement. Despite overwhelming odds, and with remarkable resilience, tenacity and optimism, indigenous Australians have remained a presence in Australia with a culture that continues to grow and redefine itself.
The seventy-seven participants in this book come from diverse backgrounds and have various opinions on the issues that face them in Australia today. They all share a desire to bring change to the way indigenous Australians are viewed and treated, and remain determined to bring their culture to the attention of the world.
'Standing Strong' has provided young indigenous Australians with the opportunity to have their say and counter the negative stereotypes portrayed by the media. What becomes clear is the strength, determination and creativity that exits within Aboriginal Australia today.
