Morrigan Crow is cursed. Born on an unlucky day, she is blamed for all local misfortunes, from hailstorms to heart attacks - and, worst of all, the curse means that Morrigan is doomed to die at midnight

on Eventide.

But as Morrigan awaits her fate, a strange and remarkable man named Jupiter North appears. Chased by black-smoke hounds and shadowy hunters on horseback, he whisks her away into the safety of a secret, magical city called Nevermoor.

It's there that Morrigan discovers Jupiter has chosen her to contend for a place in the city's most prestigious organisation: the Wundrous Society. In order to join, she must compete in four difficult and dangerous trials against hundreds of other children, each boasting an extraordinary talent that sets them apart. Except for Morrigan, who doesn't seem to have any special talent at all.

To stay in the safety of Nevermoor for good, Morrigan will need to find a way to pass the tests - or she'll have to leave the city to confront her deadly fate.

If Harry Potter had a baby with A Series of Unfortunate Events you would name that child Nevermoor. A whimsical adventure which doesn't underestimate young readers. I loved this book as an adult and I definitely would have adored this when I was younger. Middle-grade litereture at its finest! - Orah (QBD)

Morrigan Crow is a cursed child, unlucky enough to be born at the wrong time in the cycle of years. Everything that goes wrong in the town she lives in is blamed on her. Her father is a very important man in the running of the state and is constantly asked for money to repay the damage caused by the curse. If your cow is no longer giving milk it is because Morrigan looked at it. When a building collapses it is because Morrigan touched the wall as she walked past. Losing a spelling bee is because Morrigan wished you luck. No person in town takes responsibilty for their own mistakes, it is all blamed on the curse and costs her father a lot in recompense. All cursed children die on their 11th birthday, when the new era cycles to eventide. Can Morrigan escape this horrible fate? What is special about her? On the eve of her 11th birthday Morrigan meets Jupiter North, he becomes her patron and rescues her. He is part of the Wunderous Society, can he save Morrigan permanently or will she still succumb to her cursed fate? Jupiter takes her to the country of Nevermoor, where she meets a dwarf vampire, Magnificat and a dragon rider who becomes her best friend. Morrigan must pass several challenges to stay in Nevermoor. Debut Australian author Jessica Townsend has written an exciting, imaginative and "wunderous" novel for middle grade readers. With interesting characters and fantastic adventures, Morrigan's story will keep you reading to the last page and eager for more. - Kerryn (QBD)

Nevermoor is the first in a new series destined to have you desperate for the next book! This book made me feel like I was 11 years old again and reading Harry Potter for the first time. Like Alice in Wonderland with the quirkiness of Roald Dahl, I was hooked on Nevermoor from the first page! Magical. - Coreena (QBD)

Nevermoor
Nevermoor is the first book in a magical new series and is set to become one of the biggest children's books of the year. The story is at times reminiscent of Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, A Series of Unfortunate Events and more recently A Most Magical Girl. Despite these likenesses, Nevermoor is wonderfully original and captivating read for all ages. Morrigan Crowe is a true underdog; a cursed child shunned by all, including her family. An extraordinary rescuer comes to her aid and thus launches Morrigan and us as readers headlong into a 'Wundrous' new world where she must remain long enough to discover her awesome true calling. A secret society, a magical hotel, a vampire dwarf and a giant talking Magnificat are just a few enchanting elements of this riveting series that will leave you wanting more.
