A Man Of Courage And Dedication

Sir David Martin was one of Australia's best-loved public figures. Governor of NSW from 1989 to 1990, he humanised the Vice-Regal office, bringing Government House to the people. With an overriding philosophy of helping those who help others, he became known as a rare and great Australian.

Following in his father's footsteps, David Martin, an only child, joined the Navy as a Cadet Midshipman at the Royal Australian Navy College in 1947. It was the beginning of a distinguished Naval career that lasted 41 years.

This book tells the story of the man behind the public figure. It focuses very much on the man - son, husband, father and colleague. Sir David had a great love of Australia, and his genuine concern for his fellow Australians led him to establish the Sir David Martin Foundation - caring for young Australians. Diagnosed with a fatal form of lung cancer in May 1990, his death three months later - and only three days after his farewell drive from Government House - came as a great shock to a nation that had taken him to their hearts.

Above all, this is a tale of spirit and strength, determination and dedication. As Sir Ninian Stephen writes, it is a "fitting memorial to a very distinguished Australian". This authorised biography gives unprecedented access to family photographs, letters and Sir David's inspiring speeches, many of which are reproduced for the first time.
