Carrying The Fire
Michael Collins has written a really fantastic book. I couldn't put it down. He touches on his career from the very beginning as a Test Pilot which meshes in with his career at NASA. Mike Collins was the Command Module Pilot for the Apollo 11 Mission to the moon where he voyaged alongside Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong. Once in lunar orbit and the Lunar Module landed Aldrin and Armstrong on the moon, Collins orbited around the moon in the CM and he tells of his experience during that time, and also touches on how he may have been alone with no human contact, but he was far from lonely. He describes planet Earth as a fragile gem poised in the black velvet of space, and how truly incredible it was for him to be able to view the Earth from a great distance. Mike describes the engineering and logistics behind the Gemini and Apollo programs with such depth and clarity, the book is easily understood by the layperson. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in NASA and space exploration.
