Colyn finds a knife buried in the potato paddock. His father lost it when he was ten. With his knife Colyn carves a dog that comes alive, then he cuts a door into the otherworld and enters it. Here, in the world of the Kinroad, he is Rykone the Knife Lord, owner of a knife that dragons made and that will slay dragons. The dragons want to be able to travel between the two worlds, because they have friends in the human world know as 'demons'. After a battle with the dragons, Colyn is told to go back to his own world and seal the door he opened, so that the dragons cannot pass through.
