The monster showed up just after midnight. As they do. But it isn't the monster Conor's been expecting. He's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming...

The monster in his back garden, though, this monster is something different. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor. It wants the truth.

Costa Award winner Patrick Ness spins a tale from the final idea of much-loved Carnegie Medal winner Siobhan Dowd, whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself. Darkly mischievous and painfully funny, A Monster Calls is an extraordinarily moving novel of coming to terms with loss from two of our finest writers for young adults.

Conor is a young boy who is struggling with the concept of death after his mother is diagnosed with a terminal illness. An ancient monster starts visiting his room every night and tells him stories where characters learn certain lesson that Conor has to attempt to understand and relate it to his current situation. One of the most subtle and beautiful novels I have ever had the pleasure of reading - Tricia (QBD)

Untitled
An absolutely fantastic and extremely emotional read. "A Monster Calls" has a unique and powerful take on grief that definitely pulled on my heartstrings. A dark middle grade, I recommend going into it knowing little or nothing at all. - Melissa (QBD)

A Monster Calls
This novel is my all time favourite to date. It is by far the most beautiful and meaningful fantasy book I have ever read. Based on Siobhan Dowd's concept, Patrick Ness weaves the story of a boy named Connor, struggling to come to terms with his mother's cancer. Every night a monster visits him, wanting the truth that terrifies Conner. - Abbey
