Presents three stories in which John Blacksad, private investigator, attempts to find the murderer of an old lover, investigate child abductors, and discover nuclear secrets in the 1950s Red Scare.
Anthropomorphic Noir
Stories like these are the reason comics have a huge appeal for me.
Sure, I LOVE a good superhero as much as the next girl, but there is nothing like Blacksad anywhere.
With storylines that invoke shameful parts of American history (written by two Spaniards) Blacksad is a unique comic both in its content and in its artwork.
Dark Horse have really hit the nail on the head with this series and I can't wait to read the next two collections.
I especially loved to nod to Orwell with the anthropomorphic characters. I also enjoyed the quotes taken from 20s and 30s Jazz and Blues songs, from the bible and above all others, from Allan Ginsberg's seminal piece Howl.
The only downside for me was that as a lover of animals it was sometimes a little hard to read the fight scenes or the death scenes, even the few sex scenes got weird for me because they are very human things but they're happening to animals... It was just hard to see a cat getting punched in the face.
