Dr Edward Haggard is ill. Haunted by an affair long ended, he is being slowly poisoned by loss and regret, twisted by unhappiness. Finding relief only in a quiet life by the sea and the occasional ministrations of the hypodermic, he is revived by the appearance of the handsome young son of the woman he loved. But with that revival comes renewed pain and, possibly, the ghost of his love, made a strange kind of flesh . . .
