The young Laura Jackson begins an affair with Dan Cooper, but later marries the more conventional Roger Barber. Now a mature student, Laura is researching the life of Dan's mysterious aunt, the writer Hilda Tapler, when Dan suddenly re-enters her life. Haunted by lost time, she confronts her memories, but her account of events differs from Dan's in key respects, setting up a complex network of inconsistencies and tensions.
