The His Dark Materials trilogy is an epic young adult fantasy series, set in series of parallel universes and following the adventures of Lyra Belacqua, a young girl from a world where an aspect of a persons soul is presented as a lifelong animal companion known as a daemon. Her journeys throughout the worlds provides a thrilling and complex plot which cleverly examines and deconstructs a variety of themes, including religion and belief, science and advancement, sociology and prejudice, and the nature of innocence. Pullmans highly evocative language, fills the story with stunning settings, and provides a cast of fascinating characters with fully realised motivations and traits, who interact in believable ways to result in a book that can be enjoyed both on the strength of its core plot, and the intricacies of its philosophical concepts.
