OEDIPUS AT KOLONOS is the final entry in Sophocles's eternally classic Oedipus Cycle.
In OEDIPUS AT KOLONOS, Sophocles' last play, produced posthumously, Oedipus is an old man coming to terms with what he has done and what has been done to him. Instead of portraying the weakness and defenselessness of a heroic figure in old age, Sophocles gives us an exemplary, activist patriarch, capable of reliving and re-evaluating his past unlucky acts, and forgiving himself the lot. (The play nevertheless includes a raw, vivid choral depiction of the agonies of old age.) Oedipus holds firm to his hatred for the sons who have betrayed him and his love for the daughters who support and protect him. In the grand finale of both Oedipus' and Sophocles' careers, Oedipus through his own perseverance achieves a spellbinding departure from a life of grief, self-laceration, and physical degradation to enter the afterlife as a god-blessed human being, restored to glory.
