After Randal breaks his wizard's promise never to use a weapon, he must travel to the faraway tower of a master wizard to be pardoned before he can practice magic again. But can he survive such a perilous journey without a sword or magic powers, when danger is everywhere?
On his way, Randal meets up with his cousin Walter and agrees to be his squire. When Walter is injured in a tournament, Randal needs to help - fast. He enlists the help of Balpesh, the wizard who is to pardon him but then realises that he too is in grave danger. Unless he can save the wizard, Walter will die and he will lose his powers forever!
