Lost, Cold, Desperate ... Danger Runs Deep

What has happened to Alice Russell?

Five women reluctantly pick up their backpacks and start walking along the muddy track. Only four come out the other side.

The hike through the rugged Giralang Ranges is meant to take the office colleagues out of their air-conditioned comfort zone and teach resilience and team building. At least that is what the corporate retreat website advertises.

Federal Police Agent Aaron Falk has a particularly keen interest in the whereabouts of the missing bushwalker. Alice Russell is the whistleblower in his latest case. She knows all the secrets: about the company she works for and the people she works with.

Far from the hike encouraging teamwork, the women tell Falk a tale of violence and disintegrating trust. And as he delves into the disappearance, it seems some dangers run far deeper than anyone knew.

Following the phenomenal debut of her first novel, 'The Dry', Jane Harper returns with the equally well-written and suspenseful, 'Force of Nature'. This was a knockout novel. Following such a success that was "The Dry", Jane Harper had her work cut out for her, but I can say with confidence that this book was a gripping thriller, full of twists and turns, alternating between present and past views. As in her first novel, Harper proves she is an expert at the measured reveal, using character and evidence to layer by layer unveil the deeper truths of both person and situation. She weaves complex threads into the main investigation, deftly creating people whose motives to 'disappear' Alice seem equally valid and potentially deadly. Spending the three days trekking in the wilderness with the woman might have been enough for me.... I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a book full of unreliable narrators, mystery and intrigue, and a shock ending that will leave you reeling. - Jackie (QBD)

This mystery, with its twists and turn has readers at the edge of their seats! Readers are taken on a long twisting journey that designs a web of secrets, jealousy and grudges that seems impossible to solve and addictive to read. An excellent example of story-telling done right and a wonderful follow up to her previous novel The Dry. This book is highly recommended by the team of Mount Druitt. - Naomi (QBD)

I loved it! Another spellbinding thriller full of suspense from Jane Harper, just like her debut novel The Dry. Alice Russell goes missing during a team building exercise in ruggered bushland, with Aaron Falk called into help solve the mystery once again. Jane Harper is BACK BABY!!!
Following her award winning bestseller 'The Dry,' she returns with another thrilling novel exploring human corruptability and mistrust against a bureaucracy posing as a benevolent entity. The plot is driven by the cooperation between Police Agent Falk and whistle blower Alice Russell, after a team building retreat turns fatal for one participant, and is shrouded in mystery and betrayal. An engaging read, 'Force of Nature' begs the question "What is the real threat?" Is it the jungle itself, the hikers themselves or those that sent them there? All with seemingly harmless intentions, the reader is taken on an intellectual adventure without ever leaving the comfort of their favourite reading niche with a hot tea in hand (or possibly even an overfilled glass of wine and a generous portion of your favourite chocolate). After all reading is a lifestyle, albeit a safer one than hiking through a perilous jungle ghosted by an unknown threat. This is an original composition by Owen Doyle, of QBD The Bookshop at Kotara

I loved 'The Dry' so I was really looking forward to the follow up. And I did enjoy this book ... eventually. However, I feel that starting the story with the investigation and then jumping between time periods before really establishing the characters made it hard to get invested in it. Overall (regrettably) it was a bit of a let down for me. - Steven (QBD)
