Down and out ex-private investigator J.D. Fiorella is trying to get back on his feet. After years of traveling from coast to coast and too many failed business ventures to count, he moves back in with his mother in the Point Doom community of California. There he spends his days attending AA meetings, strolling the Malibu beaches and coffee shops, and trying to stay out of trouble. J.D. befriends Woody at one of his AA meetings, and Woody helps J.D. get a job selling used cars with him at a local dealership. For the first time in a while, J.D. has a salary, a solid support system in place, and he's even able to strike up an intimate relationship with one of his new coworkers. But just as things start to look up for J.D., trouble hits Point Doom. When J.D.'s only friend is gruesomely murdered, J.D. 's old habits kick in and he embarks on a mission of revenge.
Recalling his five years as a private investigator in New York, J.D. begins to skillfully uncover clues to Woody's murder. As more crime scenes appear though, he discovers he is on the trail of a vicious, psychopathic serial killer. The twists and turns continue as J.D. finds out the truth behind his job, his new girlfriend, and the murder's strange connection to his past. J.D. digs up his contacts from the Bronx to acquire information and weapons, and enlists help from two rogue police officers that had also been hunting down the same guy. When J.D. vows revenge, he means it.
