Seventeen year old Amy Miller is an only child, living with her parents in a small house at the bottom of Lark Rise. Her boyfriend Tommy lives at the top of hill in one of the few nicer houses and his mother Cecelia, doesn't think Amy is good enough for her son.
Despite everything going against them, Amy and Tommy marry and furious, Cecelia writes to her other son Jeremy to come home at once.
Jeremy is instantly attracted to Amy and pesters her relentlessly. When she rejects his advances, things take a nasty turn and Amy' whole world is turned upside down.
