An odyssey of the heart begins the moment theatre director Lucas Cameron discovers a box of letters left behind by his deceased grandmother, a famous stage actress. They were written by her protegee Jessica Fontaine, who disappeared from the stage years before following a tragic accident. Through her letters, Luke comes to fall in love with Jessica. He seeks out the passionate, talented woman of the letters, but finds instead a recluse whose hopes and desires have been crushed by fate.
In their time together at her island retreat, Luke finds that the true Jessica still lives beneath the despair. But nothing will move her to return with him to New York, to the theatre, to life. Again, a correspondence begins. It is a lifeline that strengthens her, sustains her, helps her to return - on her own terms - to the career from which she was cruelly wrenched, and to the man who has steadfastly loved and believed in her. One hesitant step at a time, she begins her journey back to her art, and to a life where anything, even love, is possible.
