Dr Edward Haggard is ill. Haunted by an affair long ended, he is being slowly poisoned by loss and regret, twisted by unhappiness. Finding relief only in a quiet life by the sea and the occasional ministrations of the hypodermic, he is revived by the appearance of the handsome young son of the woman he loved.
