It is Thanksgiving, 1993, and Anna, Portia, and Emery's mother, Louise, has just suffered a massive heart attack. The three children have returned to Santa Barbara, CA to be with their father, Buzzy, as they wait for Louise to either recover or die.
But they do not come alone. Anna, who has left behind a husband and a child in upstate New York, has brought thoughts of infidelity and her lifelong struggles with addiction. Portia, who has left behind a child with her soon-to-be-ex-husband in Maryland, has brought a well of grief over her failed marriage so deep that she's not certain she knows how to get out of it. (She has also brought a pedicure kit, so that she can get a pedicure without fear of hepatitis.) Emery, who has brought his boyfriend Alejandro, has also brought a request: that one of his sisters donate eggs so that he and Alejandro can have a baby.
As the three siblings float between the hospital and their parents' house, they will revisit the past, imagine their futures, and come to terms with the present: how they became the people they are, and who they want to be going forward.
