Mattie Wallace, part-time photographer and full-time pain in the ass, has always been good at making bad decisions, but in the five years since her mother's death, she's upped her game. A self-declared "fuck-up savant" who shuns steady employment and committed relationships, she's always assumed that she would end up like her mother, a broken alcoholic who never met a bad choice she didn't make. Now Mattie grasps at what seems like her final chance to turn things around: a trip to Gandy, Oklahoma, her mother's birthplace, to claim an inheritance from a grandmother she's never met.
Stranded in the tiny town after her battered car finally breaks down, the resourceful, relentless Mattie quickly makes friends-and enemies. She soon discovers that her mother's departure thirty-five years previously remains a local mystery: at the age of nineteen her mother skipped town with nothing but the clothes on her back. No warning. No explanation. She just disappeared. When Mattie compares the happy, talented girl the locals describe to the disaffected, damaged woman she knew, it's clear that something happened to her mother...something terrible. And if she can discover what started her mother's downward spiral, maybe she can figure out a way to stop her own.
