Though Kate Morgan's story dominates, through beautifully crafted historical passages we follow the uncertain fate of a young Christopher Marlowe, the playwright, poet, and gentleman spy of Queen Elizabeth's secret service. As the two stories progress, we realise that Kate's own fate may not be so far from her literary hero's, as she draws closer to uncovering the mysteries behind Marlowe's ill-fated demise.
